This piece is the cover photo for my AT art book, A Broken Nose & Other Lessons: Art & Reflections from the Appalachian Trail. As such, it's one of my favorites. It was dark and cold when I painted this using a reference photo, so it came to life under the light of my headlamp while I was wrapped in my sleeping bag, listening to the wind howling outside.
This painting traveled with me in my backpack for hundreds of miles until I could send it home with a stack of other paintings. It was originally created on a 3.5" x 4"-piece of watercolor paper with a paint set that was the size of the palm of my hand.
